In early 2003, Lady Miss Kier, from the band “Deee–Lite” formed a lawsuit against SEGA claiming that they stole her former persona and used it as Ulala. Kier claimed that SEGA copied her look of wearing knee high boots, short skirts, and pink pigtails. Kier also claimed that in 2000, SEGA had offered her $16,000 to license her image, name and songs for the game even though she rejected the offer. She said that the game producer went ahead and used her image anyway. The crew that worked on the game from Japan proved with documents, that while working on the game, 1997–1999, had not ever heard about Kier or Deee–Lite. Lady Kier lost the case, and has to pay almost $750,000 in legal fees.
So then, anyone can believe what they will, you right now might believe that SEGA did steal her image. But looking at the dates that this all occurred and how retro future fashion worked with retro cartoon characters, it’s not looking very good. Not to mention that on Kier’s website, she removed the page with her “evidence” that SEGA stole her image.
